Ruining Our Children (Explicit Lyrics)

I hate to sound like a more-moral-than-thou bible-thumper, but I believe the music our teens are exposed to is more damaging than in any other time in history. With such negative lyrics being spewed out on local radio, it does not promote a sense of respect and dignity. Before I give examples, I'd like to note that if you read my profile, you'll see that I listen to G-Unit and 50 Cent (or "half-a-buck" as I like to call him) among other rap groups. Like "R" rated movies and violent video games, I enjoy them in private, in the absense of children. Our local FM radio stations gear themselves to teens and pre-teens.

This week's chart-topping songs include "Gold Digger" by Kanye West,"Play" by David Banner, and "Don't Cha" by the Pussycat Dolls. I'll start with the #1 hit, "Gold Digger." The song is about liking a girl, but he doesn't care that she's a gold digger. Here are some of the lyrics:

If you fuckin with this girl then you betta be paid
You know why
It take too much to touch her
From what I heard she got a baby by Busta
My best friend say she use to fuck wit Usher
I dont care what none of ya'll say I still love her
That's great that the singer love's her, but look at the lyrics. Twice he uses the f-word, he implies she's been with quite a few guys, and it doesn't matter that she wants him for his money. He also, through his rhetoric, gives permission to the teens listening to butcher correct grammar the way he does. This is tame compared to the other hits that have been out.
The video looks like something you would find at 1am on Showtime.

Next, I'll take on David Banner. He is known mostly from his partnership in the group G-Unit. Here are the lyrics from his chart-topper this week:

Cum girl, I'm tryna get your pussy wet
Work that, lemme see you drip sweat
...and some more...

Finger fuck your pussy like you want some, girl
Work it like a nigga straight licking on your pearl
I wanna see you cum in the middle of the dance floor
A nigga can't fuck, what you think a friend of me for
I'ma beat that pussy up
I'm not making this up. This is played on local radio stations that can be listened to any one of any age. The radio station may censor some of the words, but if the teen doesn't understand it, they can download it and find out what to bounce to.

It seems as if things are not moving morally up from here. Ten years ago, TLC pushed the limits with their song "Creep" and Boyz II Men and Hootie & the Blowfish topped the Top Pop Artist category of Billboard. In 1985, Madonna pushed the envelope with her sexual "Like a Virgin", but the top ten of 1985 don't contain lyrics as morally deprived as Mr. Banner's. If you go way back to 1975, here are the fun top-five songs:

1. Love Will Keep Us Together, The Captain and Tennille
2. Rhinestone Cowboy, Glen Campbell
3. Philadelphia Freedom, Elton John
4. Before The Next Teardrop Falls, Freddy Fender
5. My Eyes Adored You, Frankie Valli
It looks like we're on a steady decline. There's a big difference between 50 Cent's "Candy Shop" and "Love Will Keep Us Together." This, among parental problems, may be the reason for the increase to 50% of 15 to 19 year olds having oral sex.

I have no problem with rap songs. I listen to them regularly. It is our children we have to think about. Is it appropriate to allow our radio stations to play songs that are sickening our children and our culture? With this downward spiral in morality, we can only imagine what will be next. I have no problem with allowing MTV to show the videos and satellite radio to play the songs because it is a paid service and be more easily hidden from teen eyes. I support legislation for banning explicit songs from FM radio. More importanly, I would like to encourage parents to act as a better filter between David Banner types and their children. Yes, one day they will be exposed to it, but the parent should parent, not the radio.

I'm proud to say I agree with you. Raising children is difficult these days and when you were growing up with the introduction of MTV music videos with bad language and jesters. Thanks for having values that will protect the children of the world. Always loving you, Mom
P.S. MTV could not be viewed by you when you were younger because we had it blocked due to the content.

You don't have to blame just Kayne West to "give(s) permission to the teens listening to butcher correct grammer" all they have to do is listen to the president speak.

But thanks for the attempt to blame pop culture for all the problems in the world.

Love Pam

I swear. Do you Leftists wake up every morning thinking of new ways to bash Bush? If you don't take a swing at our President in a twenty-four hour period, do you have night-sweats?

Sadly, children are more interested in music than Bush's views on international and domestic affairs. If they were more interested in world and national politics, I still think they would be better off. I have criticized Bush for his conception of new words and jumbling of common words. But, in the last six years, he has only said two things that are innapropriate for children: He called a NYT writer an "asshole" and Osama bin Laden a "Son-of-a-bitch." No sexual dialogue as far as I have heard. Maybe you can dig into his early college years and find something he said in private.

I don't blame pop culture for ALL the problems in the world, but I certainly attribute some of the blame. Our children's values are weakening and oral sex among teens is rocketing skyward. If parents better monitored their children and radio stations made a parent's job a little easier, kids may have more respect for women and sex. But, hey, if you're content with children listening to the lyrics of 50 and Banner, less power to you.

if you were really into protecting the children of america you might also considering banning Chaucer's writings, Shakespeare, and parts of the bible. If you were to study music and literature you would realize that throughout history music and
literature has pushed boundries and expressed what society is going through at the current time. Blamming rap groups for teens giving oral sex is idealistic and naive.

I know that you believe that 1975 was a great year for good old fashioned music with,"get down tonight" kc and the sunshine band, "that the way i like it" Kc and the sunshine ban, "killer queen" Queen, "sweet emotion" areosmith. In 1976, some singels are: "shake your booty", kc and the sunshine band, "you sexy thing", hot chocolate. Should I contuine on? One might look at these songs and think nothing of them, but you have to look at them in the context of 1975 and 1976 not a 2004 mindset. These songs were just as racy and edgy as a kayne west song or a 50 cent song. What would of happened if these songs were censored? what would your wedding of been like? a lot of classical music that whats.

TIME (vol 166, No. 13 9-26-05) wrote an article called "A Teen Twist on Sex". A study done by National Center for Health Statistics just came out (September 2005)with the frist extensive studies on teen sex. The study took place in 2002 surveying 12,571 American between the ages of 15-44. This study is the first study done on teeenage sex trends and states that it is impossible to identify tends when there has never been confirmed data before to support the statistics that are out now. So if you can find me a study that compares 1975 oral sex rates among teenages to 2004 oral sex rates and the affects music has on those rates, then we can talk.

my second point to pose to you is if you care about "the children" so much then why aren't you ranting and raving about how under funded and under staffed our american school system is, or the fact that public libraries are also under funded? Isn't education the key to knowledge? is it Kayne West and 50 Cent's fault that our youth is corrupt or is the fact that in some school systems they are pushed aside, under educated, and sent out into the world without knowing the skills that they need to? or is it just easier to blame pop culture?

Maybe if we look at the real reason for our so called corrupt youth instead of trying to make a magic bullet, we can find the real reason behind teenage oral sex trends.

well this is all coming from a leftists anyway but I would rather be a leftists then take art and expression away from the world.

The only thing that i want is for you to give me statistics that back up your viewpoint that teenagers that listen to rap music are more inclined to particpate in oral sex.

Pop music (and culture in general) is a reflection of our society, not the driving force. Maybe teenagers are going crazy with oral sex because they're increasingly frustrated with the way our society is going:

war
poverty
lack of education/opportunity
racial division

While we're talking about radio though, let's talk about the censorship that's happening by way of consolidation of radio - there's a few companies controlling the airwaves, so we think our "pop culture" is limited to what's on the radio.

Maye kids get bored with Maroon 5 and Black Eyed Peas all day so they go out and have sex. What else are they supposed to do? Go to the library? Oh, it's closed. States don't have money!

Also, I'd like to point out that I'm pretty straight-laced and I grew up without my parents censoring what I watched or listened to.
