Score: ACLU-1, America-0
On Thursday, the ACLU won their case in front of Judge Alvin Hellerstein. This Clinton-appointed judge ruled that 74 pictures and three videotapes of torture in Abu Ghraib prison should be released for the world to see. He claims that terrorists "do not need pretexts for their barbarism." In part, he's right. They don't need pictures to help motivate them to slaughter innocents and prevent democracy from spreading, but damn if it doesn't help them. Terrorist propaganda is spreading faster accross the internet and throughout the Middle East. The pictures that are to be released can be used for recruiting future terrorists and fueling the flame of hatred toward America.
I do not think these pictures should be suppressed forever, but while evil-doers are actively trying to destroy America and its projects for peace, these pictures should not be released for the public or the terrorists to see. Judge Hellerstein and the ACLU have proven that there are still enemies working to destroy the American way. This time, the enemies of America are Judge Hellerstein and the ACLU.

The difference between us and terrorists is that we are not only willing to air our dirty laundry, our government is not allowed to easily suppress it.
Freedom of information, particularly about what our government is doing, sometimes has a price.
You're right. That price is countless American lives.
Edie says: some information needs to be "classified". If anything could harm America during times when we are at war, then they do not need to be released. In time, they can, and should be de-classified.
