Leftist Propaganda
Please excuse the delay in posts. I've been juggling work and school.
I just finished the book 50 Ways to Love Your Country by MoveOn.org. If to love means to attempt to overthrow your country, this book has it right on the nose. With ways such as Defy City Hall, Attend a Rally, and Support Clean Elections, you can guess what they're getting at. I didn't find the ways the leftist group attempts to love their country shocking at all. I didn't even find Nancy Pelosi's two cents shocking. OK. So nothing out of the book was shocking to me. It was more of the same old ultra-left crap you hear on Air America. What did sadden me was what was left out. A few of the ways I think people could love their country: Support Your President, Set Up a Family Readiness Group for a Local Military Reserve Unit, or (the best way to love your country) Enlist in the Armed Forces.

There's a distinct difference between "loving your country" and "loving your country's government". Your country is the land you live in, it's people, and it's way of life. It's government is the force that draws borders in it's land, divides it's people, and tramples on it's way of life. It isn't inconsistent to love your country and hate it's government. In fact, when your government becomes tyrannical, facist, or oppressive it is your duty as someone who loves his country to fight that force.
Loving your country means protecting it from the government.

It is our government. We as a people put our officials there. We take them out (not in a Pat Robertson sense) when we deem necessary. You sound like Abbie Hoffman. I have many things I disagree with our government about, but overthrowing it is not the way to respond when it (our government) is the best system of rule to date as the book suggests. To serve your country and instigate change peacefully and democratically is much better than "fight[ing] that force."
I certainly wouldn't condone violent revolution while there were any peaceful options left on the table. However, as I alluded to "fighting that force" I was refering to the peaceful means of initiating a change in political climate that you outlined when you listed "Defy City Hall, Attend a Rally, and Support Clean Elections". None of those involve hurting anyone or taking up arms. I haven't read the book so i can't elaborate on anything they've said, however they sound like effective ways to love your country and fight the government that doesn't.
